What is a Treadmill Desk
When I told some friends and family I was getting a treadmill desk, most of them had no clue what one was. Some thought I would be sitting down and moving my feet on the treadmill. Nope.
A treadmill desk is simply a desk where instead of sitting you walk very slowly on a treadmill. Since you are walking slowly - about 1 mile per hour, you can do everything you can do sitting - like type on a keyboard and talk on the phone.
You don't get sweaty or out of breath because you're walking so slowly. Have you ever walked around while talking on the phone? It's the same thing. You just walk. It doesn't take any extra effort because you aren't trying to run a marathon, you're just wandering around without really thinking about it. That's the same thing with a treadmill desk. You just kind of do it without effort or thought.
At least that's what I hear ... I haven't really tried it for myself yet. I did a test run when I precariously propped my computer up on my current treadmill and it seemed really easy to walk and type at the same time but I won't know for sure until I get my treadmill desk set up.
If you work 8 hours a day at your desk, you can walk 8 miles without a lot of effort. That's the plan anyway. Best of all it doesn't take any extra time.
Here's a picture of a fancy-schmancy treadmill desk that some offices use. It costs $7,000. Needless to say I will not be getting this one.
